A teacher's attempt to not only survive but also thrive with gas at (or near) $4 a gallon. What exactly this means has morphed over time but you can get an idea from the sidebar.

Year End Stats
Well, three full years on the debt repayment bandwagon. This last year was pretty good but mostly because my debt forgiveness kicked in for some of my loans,
2008 Year End: $60,885.91 [Original Starting Balance]
2009 Year End: $51,499.02 [ -$9,386.89 ] (15.4%)
2010 Year End: $43,248.27 [ -$8,250.75 ] (13.6%)
2011 Year End $17,411.81 [ -$25,836.46] (42.4%)
Total: -$43,474.10 (71.4%)
In my post from last year I said, "If everything goes as planned I hope to have only about $20k in debt by this time next year and that will be across just one student loan and the second mortgage." I have less than that amount and, yes, it's just the two loans.
I also have the repayment to my emergency fund. But that hadn't "officially" happened in 2011. The money is still there today. We're paying for the fence and water heater in the next couple weeks. So the repayment will be something I need to include for 2012.
So my prediction and goal for this upcoming year? Let's see. I am roughly going to say it will be around $6,000 going into next year. I would have liked for it to be paid off but the projects around the house can't wait any longer. It will be just the one student loan though. So things aren't too horrible.
I am still owed nearly $1,000 from my deadbeat roommate. I'll probably never see it. My step-mother promised that I would get it but it's just not happening and she's made no attempt to repay it in almost a year. They're really hurting now because my dad never bothered to build up a savings fund and his job is insecure now and they're really jerking him around at the post office. I would feel bad for him but this is just solid lack of planning on his part and bad spending habits.

I think you're doing really great!
ReplyDeletesorry that you probably won't ever get the $1,000.
Thanks. With my girlfriend helping, things should progress well. It's not easy but things are moving along.
ReplyDeleteAs for the grand I lost on my step-brother, it stinks but that's the way things go. His life is currently a miserable ball of horror that I wouldn't wish on anyway. It almost makes me feel "petty" for wanted my money that he owes me. But, hell... I'm allowed to be petty once in a while and I do want it!
wish on anyone*
